The growth of factors that negatively affect the human psyche is observed in the modern
reality. This raises the question of improving the
effectiveness of psychotherapeutic services, encourages researchers to develop new tools. Associative-metaphorical
cards are interesting for scientists and therapists
in this aspect.
The purpose of
this article is to describe the basic mechanism of associative-metaphorical cards as a psychological tool. This will allow
to use cards more effectively in
practice, will identify weaknesses and implement modifications.
Metaphoric cards - is a new
psychological instrument, which based on the "Classic" psychological phenomens. It is a set of cards depicting the reality around us (people,
nature, objects, etc.). Client analyzes and
interprets his own associations that
have arisen in the mind.
1. One of the fundamental mechanisms of the cards is the law of projection. In fact cards are an incentivethat causes stream associations which contain information about the inner world of man. Cards are the object on which the projected material is applied.
Projection (Latin projectio - throwing forward) - a psychological process, which refers to the mechanisms
of psychological defense, according
to which internal mistakenly perceived as coming from outside. Person
ascribes to someone or something to your own thoughts, feelings, motives,
character traits, etc., believing that he took something coming from outside,
not inside him. First described by Sigmund Freud .
2. Important role in the work of the tool also has a feeling of safety, which is manifested in dissociated
Dissociation is the mental process, which refers to
the mechanisms of psychological defense. A person
begins to perceive what is happening to him as if it is not with him but with
someone to outsiders. Such a "dissociated" position protects from
excessive, intolerable emotions .
state is a state in which a person feels himself outside the
event, looked out at it and listening to it from outside.
The client interacts with the card (talks about the characters and
develops a plot) and keeps a sense of
magic, of unreality.. On the one
hand, it gives him confidence in the safety and on the other - it stimulates the active
search and self-disclosure.
3. Metaphor refers
to the basic phenomen underlying the tool.
Metaphor is an indirect message in the form of history (a story,
a tale) or a figure of speech, a turn of speech, consisting of words and
expressions in a figurative sense on the basis of some analogy, similarity or
comparison. The metaphor is based on the similarity or likeness, it is analog
relations: X refers to Y as A is to B . To understand sense of a metaphor the
person should activate the right hemisphere. In addition, unconscious will
catch the necessary meaning.
Researchers of different sciences (linguists, psychologists, philosophers)
explore the the metaphor. In this
article we will discuss only the basic theory.=
Linguists Bandler and
Grinder observed Erickson’s clinical
work, who often used the metaphor for therapeutic purposes,
and on the basis of these observations, built their linguistically-oriented
representation of the mechanism of the
impact of the metaphor.
A metaphor, according to their
theory, operates on the principle of the triad, passing through three stages of
1) Metaphor is the surface structure of meaning, directly expressed in the
words of the story.
2) Surface structure activates the deep structure of meaning, indirectly correlated with the listener (on the principle of association).
3) This in turn activates the returned deep structure of the meaning that is directly related to the listener.
the third stage means that the
transderivational search has begun (listener correlates with a metaphor).
Storyline itself is
only a bridge between the
listener and hidden in the story sends, the messages that will never reach the recipient without his invisible
work towards establishing the necessary
personal connection with the metaphor. Once a connection is established, the interaction between
the story and awake to life the inner world of the listener begins .
This brief overview of the basic
mechanisms of associative-metaphorical cards allows more consciously use this
tool in psychotherapy practice. Theoretical analysis does not claim to rank
"comprehensive", "fundamental." It only indicates the basic
phenomen and encourage further exploration.
