When we face life disasters, with traumatic events or with disasters that are beyond our control, we treat them as "the will of fate". But it is important to remember that our responses to crisis situations are in fact always in our hands. This is the meaning of "overcoming" the crisis. To overcome is to overcome oneself and try to successfully cope with the consequences of grief, unhappiness or another crisis. Each of us from birth is endowed with a certain set of data to us the nature of mechanisms for overcoming crises, and each of us develops additional skills as a result of accumulated life experience. All these mechanisms for overcoming crises can be improved through in-depth study, training or appropriate therapy.
These internal coping and healing strategies are symbolically represented in the COPE bundle with six cards with the hands depicted on them. Each "hand" symbolizes a certain life strategy for overcoming crises.
Feelings. The heart is the casket of our feelings: love and hate, courage and cowardice, joy and sadness, jealousy and compassion, and so on. This way of overcoming crises requires, first of all, the ability to recognize different feelings and call them by their own names. Then an attempt is made to express these feelings in the most appropriate ways for each person: using words - either verbally, or in writing: in a story or in a letter; or without the use of speech - in dance, in drawing, in modeling, in music or pantomime.
Mind. The way to overcome crises, using our mental abilities, the ability to think logically, assess the situation, comprehend new ideas, plan, analyze problems and solve them.
Activity. A way of overcoming crises that refers to the activities of our physical body. This method refers to such abilities of our physical body as perception of signals of the surrounding world with the help of appropriate receptors and sense organs: hearing, sight, smell, touch, taste, heat and cold. Feeling pain and pleasure, inner tension or relaxation. This method includes physical exercises of various kinds, such as doing physical exercises, sports, work that requires physical effort, walking in nature.
Society. This way of overcoming crises uses our ability to communicate. We can apply for support to the family, friends, professional psychologists, or to help others, go to public work, take responsibility for managing a business.
A game of imagination. This way of overcoming crises appeals to our creative abilities. Thanks to the imagination, we can dream, develop intuition and psychological flexibility, constantly transform, seek solutions in the world of play and fantasy. Using the imagination, we can easily change the future and the past.
Faith. This way of overcoming the crisis is based on the ability to believe - whether it be faith in God, in people, in a miracle or in oneself. When we are unbearable, we can with hope and trust stretch our hands to heaven and pray for help.
